WINDOWS VERSIONS

The technical information presented here applies to operating the Terror Trax CD-ROM. Terror Trax installs QuickTime for Windows, which is manufactured by Apple Computer, to display the program's multimedia. When installing QuickTime for Windows, you will be prompted to either skip or remove earlier versions of QuickTime if they are found. If you do not remove earlier versions of QuickTime, you could encounter errors saying "You Are Making a Call to an Invalid .dll File" or "Call to Undefined Dynalink."

Quicktime Installation Problems

Not Enough File Handles

If you encounter an error which reads "Not Enough File Handles to Install QuickTime" this may be related to a conflict with either existing versions of QuickTime or conflicting hidden files in the Windows or Windows\system directories.

Existing Versions of QuickTime

QuickTime installation problems often result from conflicts with existing versions of QuickTime. To resolve conflicts with existing versions of QuickTime try searching for earlier versions of QuickTime, deleting them, and then reinstall QuickTime. You can do this by doing the following:

  • Go to File Manager in Windows from the Main program group. Note: Windows 95 users can open File Manager by going to Start, Run, and typing winfile (Enter).
  • Go to File and Search on the File Manager menu bar.
  • Search for qt*.dll Starting From C:\. If QuickTime files are located, delete these manually by clicking on them to select them and go to File and Delete.
  • Next do another search by going to File and Search. This time search for *.qtc Starting From C:\.
  • When these files are located delete them all. Then, you should reinstall QuickTime by going to File and Run or Start and Run for Windows 95 users and typing d:\qtw203\qtinstal.exe (Enter) assuming D is your CD-ROM drive letter. You should have your Terror Trax CD-ROM in the drive at this time. This should result in a clean installation of QuickTime 2.03.

    Hidden Files

Sometimes files in the Windows or Windows\system directories with the "Hidden" attribute can cause problems with the installation of QuickTime. To remove the hidden file attribute, go to a DOS prompt. Switch to the Windows directory by typing cd\Windows (Enter). Type attrib - r -a -s -h (Enter). Then type cd\ (Enter) to get to a DOS prompt (C:\). At the C:\, type cd\Windows\system (Enter). At the Windows\system directory, once again type attrib - r -a -s -h (Enter). Type cd\ (Enter) to get back to your DOS prompt. Go to Windows and try installing Quicktime for Windows.

Insufficient Disk Space to Install QuickTime

The QuickTime files that Terror Trax loads get installed into the Windows and Windows\system directories. You should have approximately 3 Mb or more of disk space available on the same hard drive where Windows is installed to for the installation of QuickTime. Normally QuickTime will not install itself to a hard drive other than the drive containing your Windows files. If you are sure that you do have enough space on your hard drive to install QuickTime, follow the instructions for removing QuickTime files listed in the "Existing Versions of QuickTime" section above.

    MACINTOSH VERSIONS

So far, our technical information on this product is very limited. We do suggest that you do not use Virtual Memory when running Terror Trax. You can check to see if Virtual Memory is turned on by going under the Apple to Control Panels and selecting Memory. Click Virtual Memory off if it is turned on. Restart your Macintosh after turning off virtual memory if it was on to make this take effect. If Virtual Memory is turned on, this seems to cause choppy playback with sound and video in Terror Trax.
