Troubleshooting Instructions for the error Jake58 C1 caused a General Protection Fault in module Survive.exe

Note: The same video drivers that cause the message Jake58 C1 caused a General Protection Fault in Module Survive.exe have also been known to cause the error message Survive caused a General Protection Fault in Module Aapipkb4.drv so the instructions also apply for this error.

These error messages which can occur when attempting to launch the CD-ROM program How Would You Survive are normally caused by a video driver conflict. The solution for these General Protection Faults is to switch the video driver currently being used to a generic super vga video driver.

Changing the Video Driver

To change the Video Driver do the following:

  • To change your video driver go to the Main program group in Windows Program Manager and select Windows setup.
  • The text listed next to display will normally tell you which video driver you are using and how many colors you are running in. The driver that normally causes this error is listed in display as CLGD 5426/28 v. 1.43 or 1.43B running at 640 X 480 or 800 x 600 resolution in 256 colors.
  • Go to OPTIONS and choose CHANGE SYSTEM SETTINGS.
  • Scroll the listing of video display drivers until you see a driver listed only as super vga 640 X 480 (256 colors). Do not select another video driver other than any of the super vga video drivers because it will probably not be compatible with your system.
  • Once you have clicked the super vga video driver, click OK.
  • You may be prompted to insert a Windows 3.11 floppy disk to install this video driver.
  • If you see a window which requests you to use the currently installed driver or install a New Driver click current and restart Windows when prompted.

This video driver seems to conflict with the operation of How Would You Survive?. There is a version 1.5 of this Cirrus Logic video driver available which does not seem to have this conflict. Switching to the super vga video driver should allow you to run the CD-ROM How Would You Survive? without receiving these error messages.
