WINDOWS VERSIONS

Note: The SFPD Homicide program on CD-ROM should operate in Windows 3.1/3.11 or Windows 95.

Installation Issues

Installation program quits after QuickTime loads

If QuickTime loads but then the installation quits without installing the SFPD program files this is normally related to a conflict with a memory resident program. The conflicting program(s) have generally been found to load in the Windows Startup group. This problem has often occurred when First Aid 95 loads in the Startup group. We recommend disabling any memory resident programs from your Startup group for the SFPD Homicide installation.

To disable Startup programs in Windows 3.1/3.11, do the following:

  • Double click the Startup group in Windows Program Manager to open it.
  • Using your mouse, drag the icons for any programs you have loading in Startup to either your desktop or another icon group in Windows.
  • After removing program icons from Startup, close all open windows, exit Windows, and restart your computer.
  • Restart Windows and then try installing the SFPD Homicide CD-ROM software. Both QuickTime and the SFPD program files should install completely.

If you are using Windows 95 and want to disable programs loading in your Startup group do the following:

  • Click once with your right mouse button on the Start button in Windows 95 and click Open.
  • Double click Programs and then Startup. Drag whatever icons you have in Startup to either your Windows desktop or another icon group in Windows 95.
  • After removing program icons from Startup, close all open windows, exit Windows, and restart your computer.
  • Restart Windows and install the SFPD Homicide CD-ROM software.

    Beginning the Case

General Protection Fault in Module SFPD.EXE

If you are attempting to run the SFPD Homicide CD-ROM on a Packard Bell machine which loads the Packard Bell "Navigator" in the Startup group this is most likely the cause of the error message. You will have to drag the Packard Bell "Navigator" out of "Startup" and on to either your desktop or another icon group in Windows. For instructions on how to remove a program icon from the Startup group in Windows 3.1/3.11 or Windows 95, refer to the directions for doing so under Installation Issues with the SFPD Homicide CD-ROM. Exit Windows and then re-enter Windows to try and launch the SFPD Homicide CD-ROM.

    MACINTOSH VERSIONS

    Sound

Sound problems with the SFPD CD-ROM on a Macintosh computer are normally related to memory. If you have no sound, try either adjusting the memory allocated to the "Body in the Bay" icon on your hard drive or try turning on Virtual Memory. To adjust the memory allocated to the "Body in the Bay" icon, open your Macintosh hard disk, open the folder called San Francisco Homicide, and click once on the "Body in the Bay" icon so it highlights. Go to File on the menu bar and scroll down to Get Info. This will bring up the Memory Requirements for the program. The memory settings may vary on certain machines, but as a general rule you should make the Preferred Memory setting equal to the Minimum amount allocated, even if you have to lower it. You can change the memory settings by clicking in the Preferred Memory box with your mouse and backspacing out the existing setting. Type in a number which is equivalent to the Minimum amount. Close the window for Memory Requirements and try running the SFPD CD-ROM.

To turn on Virtual Memory, go to the Apple on the menu bar, scroll down to Control Panels, and open Memory. Click on Virtual Memory and restart your Macintosh after closing the Memory Control Panel. Turning on Virtual Memory often corrects sound problems in the SFPD Homicide program.

SFPD Homicide continually requests another CD-ROM

If the SFPD Homicide program seems to continually request you to insert another disk, but doesn't eject the CD-ROM currently in the drive, do the following:

  • Open up the CD-ROM Toolkit control panel.
  • Next, select options (in the lower left corner of the box.)
  • In the options window on the right-hand side there should be an area labeled: "Allow mounting of:" The option for "Any ISO9660 volumes on 'dual-format' Apple HFS CD-ROMs" should be checked OFF. If this option is checked ON, the CD-ROM Toolkit will mount both the MacIntosh side of the CD-ROM AND the IBM side! This puts two CD-ROM icons on the desktop instead of one, and the program only drags one icon to the trash to eject the CD-ROM, causing the problem. Close up the CD-ROM Toolkit Control Panel window and restart your Macintosh to make the changes take effect.
