Prehistoria Prehistoria Windows \ Macintosh Versions Version 1.0 - 1.01 Technical Information Page
WINDOWS VERSIONS INSTALLATION Prehistoria may not be able to be installed on systems that do not meet the minimum system requirements or if Windows is not in Enhanced mode. Note: Customers using OS/2 will most likely encounter problems because Prehistoria needs to run through Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions (MSCDEX). If you are in Enhanced mode Windows and meet the system requirements and cannot get through the installation successfully do the following:
Manual Installation Instructions
STARTING THE PROGRAM General Protection Faults General Protection Faults can be caused by a variety of things. Video driver conflicts are one of the most common causes of GPF's. It is recommended to try a different driver for test purposes; Microsoft's SVGA (256 color) drivers are recommended. Problems Reading or Locating the CD-ROM If an error occurs which asks you to Insert the PH94 CD-ROM or if data cannot be located on the CD-ROM this error can occur with OS/2 users. OS/2 is incompatible with Prehistoria, there is no fix for this at this time. Cannot Read Drive D - This error can be caused by a dirty CD-ROM. Try cleaning the bottom (unprinted side) of the CD-ROM with a soft cloth from the center to the outer edge in a straight line. These types of errors can occur with Corel's CD-ROM extensions. MSCDEX is needed to run Prehistoria, the program will most likely not run with Corel CD-ROM Extensions. However, we have seen version 1.13C or later of Corel CD-ROM Extensions work with Prehistoria. If you want to check on updated versions of Corel CD-ROM Extensions you can call Corel at (613)-728-8200. Prehistoria must be run in 386 Enhanced mode and needs at least a 4 Mb swapfile. Lockups Be sure to run Program Manager as the main Windows shell rather than any menu systems. Disable EMM386 by typing REM followed by a space in front of the device line that loads EMM386 in the config.sys file. Save, reboot, and try it again. Video Drivers 256 Color Error Messages. If you receive an error message about needing 256 colors then your video driver is most likely in VGA (16 color mode). You will need to run a video driver with at least 640 X 480 256 colors. There is no icon for Prehistoria. If you do not have a Prehistoria icon in Windows, you should reinstall and say yes to creating a program group. Insufficient Memory
Check to make sure you meet the system requirements for Prehistoria. Be sure you are running Windows in 386 Enhanced mode and have at least a 4 Mb swap file. PROBLEMS WITH VIDEO DISPLAY Unable to Open a Movie File - Try disabling EMM386 by typing REM followed by a space in front of the Device line for EMM386.exe in the Config.sys File, Save, and reboot. Video Appears Outside the Playbox Try adjusting the settings on the Optimize= line of the Qtw.ini file. Go to making MODIFICATIONS TO QUICKTIME FILES for instructions on how to do this. Grainy Video Display Change the Video Driver - Be sure that when the driver is changed that the customer selects a driver with at least 256 colors. The more colors, the better the display. However higher numbers of colors can cause the videos to be jerky. Slow or Choppy Video Playback Try increasing the number of buffers in your Config.sys file to 35. If this fails, go to the information on CD-ROM buffers. CD-ROM Buffers - Increasing the number of buffers loading with your CD-ROM extensions in the Autoexec.bat file, usually MSCDEX.EXE can help for choppy playback. For example, if you have a line in your Autoexec.bat file which reads C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE, change the line to read C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /M:16. Try Changing the Video Driver For example: if your video driver is 800 x 600 256 color, try 640 x 480 256 color mode, or change it to VGA. Check the version of MSCDEX. Exit out of Windows to a DOS prompt and go to the root directory (C:\>). Type the following: type Autoexec.bat (enter). Look for the line that has MSCDEX.EXE and look to see what directory it loads from. Go to that directory from the DOS prompt and type MSCDEX (enter). It will show a version number. If the version number is not 2.21 or higher, it is recommended to call the CD-ROM manufacturer for updated CD-ROM drivers. If these fail to resolve the problem, it is possible your system is not MPC compliant, and you should check with your system vendor or manufacturer of the video card. General Protection Faults during Movies
Change the video driver to a different video driver for test purposes. This sometimes happens with the Headland Technology video card, which uses the Video 7 drivers. Microsoft's SVGA.EXE drivers are recommended for test purposes. PROBLEMS WITH SOUND No Sound If Prehistoria does not have sound there may be a problem in your Windows sound setup. Open the Control Panel (located in the Main Program Group) and then double-click on the Sound icon. You will see a list box on the right side of the dialog box containing files ending with "WAV". Use your mouse to highlight one of these files and then click on the button labeled TEST. If you do not hear the sound you highlighted play from your sound card, then the sound card is not set up properly to run under Windows. You will need to consult the manual for your sound card and/or contact the sound card manufacturer. Choppy Sound Try increasing the number of buffers in your Config.sys file to 35. If this fails, go to the next section for CD-ROM buffers. CD-ROM Buffers - Increase the number of buffers loading with your CD-ROM extensions from the autoexec.bat file, usually MSCDEX.EXE. For example, if there is a line in your Autoexec.bat file which reads C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE, change the line to read C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /M:16. If this does not help, try changing your video driver. Try Changing the Video Driver Try changing the video driver Windows uses. For example: if your video driver is set to 800 x 600 256 colors, try 640 x 480 256 colors, or change it to VGA). It should show a version number. If the version number is not 2.21 or higher, the customer must call the maker of the CD-ROM for an updated CD-ROM driver.
If these fail to resolve the problem, it is possible your system is not MPC compliant, and you should check with your system vendor or manufacturer of the video card. MISCELLANEOUS PROBLEMS Lockups in the Creature Show Lockups can be caused by many things including a conflict with the video driver. Try using a different video driver for test purposes. This problem has sometimes occurred with ATI video drivers. If you do experience lockups with an ATI Mach 64 video card click see the following: ATI MACH 64 DRIVER FIX. General Protection Faults during Printing
General Protection Faults during print jobs with Prehistoria have generally been related to conflicts with printer drivers. You may want to try changing the printer driver to a driver that the printer can emulate. If you are having problems printing text, try changing the printer driver to a Generic\Text only driver through the printers icon in Windows. MACINTOSH VERSIONS Here are the most common types of problems that have occurred with Macintosh versions 1.0 and 1.01 of Prehistoria. Monitor size and 256 color display Prehistoria requires a 13" or larger color monitor and the capability to run 256 colors. You can check the number of colors that you are running in by going under the Apple to Control Panels and Monitors. Printing This problem often appears as a type 1 error message. Version 1.01 of Prehistoria should fix this problem. If version 1.01 does not fix this, check if the QuickTime Power Plug is in the Extensions folder. You can open Extensions by first opening the hard disk and then the System Folder. If the QuickTime Power Plug is in Extensions, try dragging it to the desktop and restarting the machine. Error Messages PH94 cannot be run from a write protected or read -only device This occurs when Prehistoria is not installed and run from the Macintosh hard drive. To install the Prehistoria program files, drag the PH94 folder located on the Prehistoria CD-ROM and drop it on the Macintosh hard drive. Init -8 and\or Unimplemented Trap Errors First, check the version of QuickTime that is on the system. Make sure that it is version 1.6.1. Trap errors are very common on systems that do not have QuickTime installed. It is also good to check and see if 32 bit addressing is turned on or off. Generally 32 bit addressing should be on, but it is worthwhile to try turning it off as well. To check the addressing, click the Apple, go to Control Panels and then click on Memory. Restart the machine after changing the memory addressing. The Init - 8 error can occur with Prehistoria if: 1)the Prehistoria icon was dragged to the Macintosh hard drive instead of the entire PH94 folder and 2) when the Prehistoria folder (PH94) has been installed to a external hard drive. For test purposes, try installing Prehistoria to a machine with an internal hard drive.
